Mikayla’s introduction to optometry was an eye surgery she had as a child. She has always been interested in biology but the dream to pursue optometry never faded. After learning more about the field and work-life balance she was hooked. She hopes to pursue her optometry degree after UCSB and eventually open her own practice. Joining Envision has given her valuable connections to optometry, insight into the OAT, and she has met amazing like-minded people.

Andrew, a former microtia (small ear) and HOH patient, started pursuing optometry after discovering his love for visual neuroscience. Andrew hopes to eventually become an optometrist and open his own practice; if not, he would love to work in visual industrial research. Andrew used to work for UCSB's VIU Lab and NTU's Embryonic Stem Cell Lab; now, he works for the Neurobiology of Addiction Lab. Joining Envision has allowed him to become a more distinguished candidate and make important connections in preparation for both life and further education.

Since her childhood, Vivian gained an interest in ophthalmology and optometry from her annual eye checkups following ptosis surgery. Eye care stood out as one of the rare, fun doctor appointments for a kid with its fascinating tools and devices. Vivian has her eyes set on this field for its chill work-life balance and being able to have a mix of both patient interaction and working hands-on with equipment. While she is on the route to medical school, Envision has allowed her to gain insight into eye care from the optometrist's point of view.

Sophia first became interested in optometry after she began to wear glasses in middle school. She always knew she wanted to work with people and admired the flexibility, opportunity for specialization, and ability to open a private practice. Sophia currently works as an optometric technician with hopes of attending optometry school post-graduation. She joined Envision to be able to meet other students with the same aspirations as her and has greatly enjoyed being able to continue to learn about the field and better prepare for her future!

After shadowing a couple different healthcare professionals, Ethan decided that optometry was the right choice for him. He wants to help improve the lives of others while avoiding the physically or emotionally taxing treatments which may be found in other professions. His favorite part of Envision is the cooperative environment of working alongside students with similar goals. Ethan also currently works part time as an optometric technician at Bream Optometry in the Goleta Costco.
Optometry would be a great opportunity to help underserved communities and improve someone’s quality of life with instant feedback.

Nicole started pursuing optometry when she learned about the job during a career fair in middle school. Already interested in the healthcare industry, she was attracted to optometry's high salary, good work-life balance, and cleanliness compared to other healthcare fields. Nicole hopes to become an optometrist and open her own practice. Joining Envision has helped her make connections and prepare for optometry school.
